Inlays are used to replace fillings. They are also known as indirect fillings. They are used to recreate the anatomy of a tooth once the decay is removed. Restorations are often made form resin material, porcelain, or gold, though most frequently porcelain. The porcelain inlay is the color of a tooth, hence invisible to the naked eye. They conserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.
Once your dentist makes and impression of your tooth, the inlay is made. Inlays usually take two or three appointments to complete. The reason is because once the impression is made, it has to be sent to a lab to be specialized to fit your tooth. On the first visit, your dentist will place a temporary inlay. On the second or third visit, she will replace it with a permanent inlay.
Inlays are very durable and will not need to be replaced for many years. Another great thing about inlays is that they are not susceptible to expansion and contraction caused by eating or drinking hot or cold foods and drinks. They never cause the tooth to crack and become weaker. The shape of the inlay helps keep the gums around the decayed tooth healthy. The inlay prevents bacteria from destroying the tooth further. The tooth is less worn down by bite also.
