Periodontal disease treatment begins with the extermination of sub-gingival tartar and biofilm deposits. A procedure called scaling and root planing is step one in seeing to periodontal problems, which is to remove tartar by scraping it from each surface of each tooth. Tartar consists mostly of calcium phosphate, which is what teeth are made up of. Tartar deposits harmful bacteria, which is what makes is so dangerous to teeth. Tartar stuck to teeth appears to be hardened, so that it needs scraping to be removed.
Bacteria in tartar is accountable for periodontal disease. Oxygenation reduces populations. Thorough brushing focusing on the gumline with diluted hydrogen peroxide, as well as flossing, can help to prevent gingivitis and the formation of tartar, which lead to periodontal diseases. Hydrogen peroxide with concentration above 1% is most effective.
Enzyms found in preparations can dissolve tartar. Agents that are known to work well include lysozyme, lactoperozidase, glucose oxidase, mutanase, and dextranase. Another known method involves the use of periostat. It has be proven to lessen alveolar bone loss and advance the healing of the disease, with some side-effects. Unfortunately, periostat can’t destroy the bacteria, because otherwise it would destroy the tissue. Laser assisted periodontal therapy can, however kill the bacteria, in some cases.
