Bacteria in mouth eat sugars and food stuck on or in-between teeth and produce acids. These acids cause teeth to lose minerals (demineralization) and form cavities (decay). Scientists have found that Fluoride disrupts acid production by bacteria and help in re-mineralization of the teeth, making teeth stronger.
Fluoride naturally occurs in food and water, but may not be sufficient. Research indicates that topical fluoride application by dental professionals is important in fighting tooth cavities. It is important for children to get fluoride treatment when the primary and permanent teeth come in the mouth. Newly emerged teeth have weak enamel and are very susceptible to decay.
Fluoride becomes incorporated into the developing teeth and makes them more resistant to acid attacks. If your child has a history of cavities or is at high risk of decay, he or she should use additional fluoride, further promoting remineralization of the teeth.
Many children get fluoride treatments every six months. The treatments provide extra protection against cavities, even if children already drink fluoridated water. We provide fluoride treatment for kids age 2 through 14 to prevent the decay of their teeth and make them strong.
