TMJ

What is a TMJ

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJ, is when the jawbone’s connection to the skull is slightly misaligned or inflamed. This can be caused by an eroded temporomandibular disk, damaged cartilage in the area, or damage due to an injury. This leads to a variety of symptoms, including but not limited to

  • Clicking noises
  • Pain or tenderness of the jaw
  • Pain on one or both sides of the jaw
  • Painful chewing
  • Aching pain in and around the ear(s)
  • Locked Jaw
  • General facial pain

Risk factors for TMJ include injury, genetic disposition, chronic clenching, or connective tissue disease.

TMJ Treatment

Treatments:

  • Oral Splints: Splint therapy is regarded as a safe and effective way to fix TMJ. It is a single soft retainer that is fitted to the upper teeth and lower teeth, thereby adjusting the bite angle.
  • Mouthguards: Mouthguards operate on the same principle as Oral Splints, but do not fit to the upper and lower teeth simultaneously.
  • Physical Therapy: We work closely with physiotherapists and chiropractors to give you the best treatment possible
